Basic Facilities
The fully equipped Surgery room (room 115), measuring 7m x 4.9m, is used to prepare animals for a variety of studies, from changes in blood profiles to monitoring the digestion of various feedstuffs. Associated with the surgery room are the Preparation and Recovery room (Rooms 114 and 121 respectively). Rooms 119 and 120 are two small Experimental Rooms, located near the surgery room. Essentially these rooms are shells, with independent ventilation, that are adaptable to a wide array of research using sows, piglets or growing pigs. The rooms measure 6.4m x 6.4m and can be fitted with penning to suit the needs of particular studies. Two Metabolic Rooms (Room 124 and 144) can accommodate up to 20 metabolism crates.
Intensive Facilities
There are two Intensive Rooms (Rooms 135 and 136) that can each house 76 grower/finisher pigs in fully slatted, individual pens. Each rooms measures 19.8m x 7m and has 4 rows of 19 pens. The rooms are equipped with nipple drinkers and manual filled, single space feeders; pen partitions can be removed to alter the number of pigs per pen to accommodate trail design.
Semi-Intensive Facilities
There are eight Semi-intensive Rooms (Rooms 139, 140, 141, 142, 145, 146, 147 and 148) that can each house
Commercial Facilities
There are three Commercial Rooms (Rooms 128, 129 and 130) that can each house 144 grower/finisher pigs per production cycle. Each room measures 14.3m by 10.7m and contains 12 pens each capable of holding 12 pigs. The rooms have partially slatted floors and are equipped with nipple drinkers and automatic feeders.
Engineering Facilities
There are two Engineering Rooms (Rooms 132 and 133) that measure 14.3m x 11m each and have fully slatted floors throughout. The rooms are equipped with nipple drinkers and automatic feeders and the penning can be easily moved for frequent changes in pen size, shape and location. There are nine fully independent manure channels within the rooms that allow for a variety of studies on manure storage, treatment and composition.
Nursery
The new Nursery, built in 1994 is attached to Barn 4 and measures 16.6m x 12.6m. There are three identical all-in-all-out rooms each measuring 4m x 14m. Each room has 12 pens, capable of holding 10 pigs/pen, for a total of 120 pigs. The 12 pens can be easily split into 24 pens, enabling different research requirements to be accommodated.
Sow Barns
As a result of renovations in 1992, PSCI’s sow barn now consists of two 107-sow and one 66-sow herds housed in three separate barns: Barns 2, 3 and 4. Barn 2 is a 66-sow barn. It has a gestation room that measures 18.4m x 9.3m and has 24 pens that measure 4.6m x 1.5m, each capable of holding 3-4 sows. The room is equipped with nipple drinkers and can hold 66-sows plus boars and gilts. This barn also has a farrowing room and a nursery room. The farrowing room measures 15.7m x 9.4m and can hold 16 sows and litters. The nursery room measures 9.3m x 5.3m and can house 120 piglets.
Barns 3 and 4 are identical in design and each has a total area of 904m2. Each barn includes breeding and gestation areas, four farrowing rooms and a nursery room. The gestation rooms are 34m x 10.5m with 92 individual stalls 2m x 0.65m each. In addition, there are 2 large gilt pens, 6-boar pens and 2 breeding pens. The rooms are equipped with nipple drinkers and individual feeders in the gestation stalls and have partially slatted floors.
The four farrowing rooms in each barn are 14.8m x 6.4m, can hold 7 sows per room and are equipped with nipple drinkers and manual feeders. All farrowing rooms have been renovated, providing upgraded cast-iron floors under the sows, plastic covered expanded metal in creep areas, and rheostat control on the heat lamps.
There are two nursery rooms in Barn 3. One measures 6.6m x 7m, can hold 150 piglets in 15 pens and each pen measures 2m x 1.2m. The other room measures 3.3m x 3.5m and can hold up to 80 piglets in 8 pens. These rooms are equipped with nipple drinkers and manual feeders.
Replacement Herd Facilities
Barn 7 serves primarily as the replacement herd barn. It can hold up to 220 animals and measures 20.6m x 12m. There are 10 pens that measure 5 x 3.3m and 2 pens that measure 5m x 1.6m. The pens are equipped with either wet/dry feeders or nipple drinkers and dry feeders, and the entire area has partially slatted floors. Approximately 50% of the space used to house market animals.
Other Facilities
A new pre-mix room and shop was built in 1997. It allows for the storage of special ingredients and experimental substances and the preparation of pre-mixes for experimental diets. The Centre maintains simple on-site Laboratory facilities in both the Barn and Main Office buildings. The use of the facilities is restricted to sample handling and some limited assays. More specialized lab facilities and equipment are available at the University of Saskatchewan campus.
