Laura Eastwood, originally from England, grew up in Burlington, Ontario. At the age of nine she got her first taste of agriculture when she began riding horses. After spending as much time as possible in the barn, she eventually bought her own horse, and with her family, moved to a small horse farm. As her love for animals continued to grow, she found herself working in a local animal hospital throughout high school, and in 2002 she began a B.Sc. program at the University of Guelph, majoring in Animal Biology. Three months after graduating, Laura moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to pursue her M.Sc. Degree at the University of Saskatchewan in conjunction with the Prairie Swine Centre, under the supervision of Dr. Pascal Leterme. Her M.Sc. research program was focused on ingredient evaluation, looking at the nutritional value and functional properties of flaxseed meal in swine nutrition. After completing her M.Sc. in June 2008 she chose to remain at the Prairie Swine Centre to pursue a Ph.D. looking at the effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids on the reproductive performances of sows.
