Flaxseed Meal in Swine Rations: Chemical Composition, Energy Content and Phosphorus Availability

A full nutritional profile must be completed on flaxseed meal in order to include it as a regular ingredient for swine. Chemical composition, availability of nutrients, DE and NE values were investigated. Phosphorus availability is low in flaxseed meal as 70% of it is bound to phytic acid. Microbial phytase may be beneficial when using a flaxseed meal based diet. Flaxseed meal had a crude protein content of 31.6%, an ether extract level of 12.2%, 3.52 Mcal DE/kg and 2.445 Mcal NE/kg. Phosphorous digestibility was increased by 40% when using 2570 FTU/kg microbial phytase in diets of 30% flaxseed meal.
