Dr. Patience is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Prairie Swine Centre and is an Adjunct Professor of Animal and Poultry Science and of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Saskatchewan. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, he conducts research in the area of swine nutrition, with particular emphasis on amino acids and energy, and in the area of swine production, with a primary focus on defining feeding and management programs that maximize net income. He is also involved in graduate student training.

Dr. Patience is a graduate of the University of Guelph, where he received a B.Sc. (Agr) in 1974 and a M.Sc. in animal nutrition in 1976, and of Cornell University, where he received a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry in 1985. Prior to joining the Prairie Swine Centre, he was employed in extension, as a swine specialist, and in the feed industry, as a nutritionist.

Dr. Patience is past president of the Canadian Society of Animal Science, has served on the editorial boards of various scientific journals and is a Director or past-Director of a number of research organizations. He is an active speaker, having presented more than 200 talks at both academic and industry conferences, and has served as a consultant to the pig and feed industries in Europe, North and South America and Asia.

John and his wife Ann reside in Saskatoon; they have three children.
