The DE Content of Hull-less Barley

WShannon
Nutrition
October 19, 2020

In Western Canada, hull-less barley is important for grower-finisher pigs as it is a source of amino acids and energy. The nutritional value of hull-less barley DE content has been unclear in previous reports. The hull-less barley DE content was analyzed in relation to barley, triticale and wheat. Using neutral-detergent insoluble nitrogen (NDIN), neutral-detergent fiber (NDF) and starch analyses, the DE content was predicted. Clean hull-less barley had a DE content that was equal to that of wheat, while uncleaned hull-less barley had a lesser DE value compared to wheat.
