Replacement of Soybean Meal with Canola Meal in Weaned Pig Diets

October 21, 2020

Canola meal has a fibre content that is three times higher compared to soybean meal which may limit nutrient availability as it limits digestibility. Canola meal was assessed in regard to its nutritional value to see if it could replace soybean meal. Increasing content of canola meal led to an increase in fibre content in diets, which hindered pig performance in weaned pigs. Decreased average daily gain, voluntary feed intake and feed efficiency was noted. Weaned pig diets should not include more than 8% canola meal without additional processing to reduce fibre content negative effects.
