Nutritional Value of Corn and Wheat Distillers Grain and Growth Performance

October 22, 2020

Increasing quantities of distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are becoming available for livestock rations as the ethanol industry grows. The nutritional value of DDGS is not fully understood for swine. Generally, a higher concentration of nutrients such as protein, vitamins, fat, fibre and minerals are present in DDGS compared to its parent grain. The concentrated nutrients are due to removal of most cereal starch during the process of fermentation. Corn DDGS had the highest digestible energy (DE) and ileal digestible lysine contents. Among DDGS samples, digestible phosphorus was similar in content. Further investigation should occur since DDGS led to decreased growth performance which may be from nutritional factors or reduced average daily feed intake.
