October 23, 2020

The active ingredient of Paylean® is ractopamine known to stimulate muscle growth and inhibit lipid deposition. It has recently been registered in Canada and is used to increase the profitability of pork production. Paylean was evaluated  to see its effects on carcass characteristics, performance, carcass quality and the economics of pork production in finishing pigs. Growth and feed efficiency were improved by 13% when fed 5 ppm/kg ractopamine for 26 days. Responses diminish if ractopamine is received for over 28 days. Transit losses were higher and decreased backfat with improved loin thickness were noted.
