The Effect on Growing Pig Performance of Changes in Energy Intake Achieved Through Restriction of Feed Intake Versus Changes in Dietary Energy Concentration

November 20, 2020

Altering the energy density of the diet or restricting feed intake can manipulate the pig’s energy. These changes in energy intake were monitored to see the pig’s response. Dietary energy changes may not change the energy intake of the pig, but restriction of feed does. Average daily feed intake was affected by both methods, though average daily gain, gain to feed ratio and protein deposition rate were all significantly altered in the restriction of feed allowance trial alone. Each method has different effects on swine energy metabolism and should be used accordingly.
