Efficacy of Feed Additives

Fusarium mould can often contaminate grains and can produce different mycotoxins including deoxynivalenol (DON). DON has negative effects in pigs when given more than 1 ppm in their feed. Feed additives are available to help reduce the effects of DON, but their effectiveness is still unclear. Four of these mycotoxin inhibitors were examined with only one out of the four (Defusion also known as Akey) showing improvements in average daily feed intake and weight gain. Defusion is currently not available for use in Canada yet though. Some inhibitors may be more effective against other mycotoxins. Successful DON inhibitors would be very beneficial to the swine industry as cheaper contaminated grains could be used as feed.
