Better Disease Detection is Nothing to Sneeze At

Pig diseases are costly, reduce performance, lower production and can lead to losses. Serologic testing the antibodies that the animals produce when fighting off an infection can detect which diseases are present. Currently, the serologic test used can only detect one agents’ antibodies at a time; each virus or bacteria needs to be tested separately. This approach can be inefficient, time-consuming and costly. A test is being developed that can identify several diseases at once including Porcine Circovirus type 2, Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus type 1 and 2 as well as Swine Influenza Virus. This assay is known as Multiplexed Fluorescing Immuno Assay. By using this assay to detect up to four diseases at once, time and money can be saved.
