Barn deterioration happens at a rapid pace in the swine industry due to conditions including high moisture, varying temperature, corrosive gases and the presence of microorganisms and dust. Components like the walls, attics, ceiling and eaves are often affected. Renovations are costly and often need to be done every few years, so research is focusing on ways to prolong the life of the barns. Concrete, wood and metal are the most commonly used materials in barn structures and research is being done to see what prevention strategies may help mitigate barn deterioration.
