Genomics can have a major impact on the pork industry since it can help improve disease resilience. This will help pigs cope with disease, leading to a faster recovery. Serologic testing, the study of blood serum is also important in the pork industry, specifically in regard to immune system response to pathogens. It can detect the antibodies in the animal’s bloodstream, milk or oral fluids. Currently each virus or bacteria must be tested separately which can be time consuming and costly. A single test is being developed that will be capable of testing Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus type 1 and 2, Swine Influenza Virus and Porcine Circovirus type 2. Instead of four tests, only one will be needed, resulting in a much more efficient process.
