Prairie Swine Centre Testing Nanotechnology Applications in Pig Industry

Nanotechnology uses small particles and has many applications. One of notice is their antimicrobial properties that could aid in biosecurity and gas emissions of swine barns. Previously, they have been used for filtering air and water purification. The nanoparticle zinc oxide was proven to be the most effective for use in pig barns. It reduced bioaerosol levels when it was implemented in the air filtration system and controlled growth of common pathogens. Nanoparticles may be a better option than the conventional disinfectants, but the use of it is 12 cents higher. The filtration system is much more expensive so it is not currently a practical solution.
