Managing Feeding to Reduce Feed Wastage in Lactation

The largest cost associated with producing pork is feed. Feed wastage and spoilage may occur in lactating sows as they can be fed up to three times a day to maximize litter performance and feed intake. Electronic feeding systems are now commonly used as they reduce feed wastage, lower labour costs, collect feed intake data and control delivery of fresh feed but they can be costly to maintain and install. A modified feeding system was developed that has the same benefits as the electronic feeding system (other than automatic recording of feed intake), but a much lower cost.
