Hannah Burlet, Jean-Phillipe Martineau – New research presented at the 2026 PSC Producer Meetings by Jean-Phillipe Martineau from Swine Nutrition Partners highlights several opportunities to improve pig performance while managing feed costs. For nursery pigs, diets with lower crude protein can support gut health and reduce the risk of diarrhea when amino acid needs are still met. Research also shows potential benefits from enzymes such as phytase, xylanase and protease to improve nutrient digestion and reduce feed costs. Lower dietary zinc levels are being explored as regulations change, while copper may provide additional benefits when used appropriately. Two iron injections before farrowing reduced anemia in piglets and improved sow performance. Pre-farrow top-dress diets also reduced stillbirths. In grow-finish pigs, enzymes may reduce feed costs without hurting performance, while newer hybrid rye varieties can be included in diets at higher levels without reducing growth.
