Bernardo Predicala – A study evaluated a rapid test kit for detecting Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv) in Canadian swine herds. The study confirmed that the RT-LAMP–based kit could successfully detect North American PEDv strains in infected pigs, providing results in about 30–45 minutes. The test is designed as a simpler, faster alternative to PCR testing and could support quicker disease surveillance and biosecurity decisions on farms.
However, researchers found that interpreting the colour-based results could sometimes be difficult because positive and negative reactions appeared visually similar in certain samples. To improve accuracy and ease of use, the team modified the test kit by changing dyes, refining reagents, and updating sample preparation procedures. Further laboratory and field testing is planned before commercialization. The goal is to create a practical, low-cost screening tool for producers and veterinarians to help prevent and control PEDv outbreaks.
