Cooling Systems for Pigs a Hot Topic

Transportation needs to be properly ventilated for pigs as they do not have sweat glands and often overheat which can be fatal. Most pig transport vehicles in Canada do not have a cooling system in place. Water misting systems can be used to cool down pigs when loading and unloading, but this can increase humidity levels which are also dangerous. Using the misting system alongside a mechanical ventilation system worked well, though some compartments of the truck did not see as many benefits. The mister/ventilation approach can be used to cool down pigs during transportation, improving welfare and reducing loss of pigs.
