Comparison of Urination Frequency of Grower-Finisher Pigs to Ammonia Emission

Ammonia emissions have negative consequences on the environment, animals and workers in the swine industry. Urine breakdown produces ammonia in puddles and slurry. If urine puddle numbers are known, ammonia emission predictions can be made using a computer model. Puddles were calculated by number of urinations per pig per hour. Males and females of all ages in grow-finish phase had similar urination frequency, usually occurring between 12pm and 8pm. No correlations were measured between ammonia and puddles as the puddles continue emitting ammonia for hours.
