Ken Engele, Murray Pettitt – The Prairie Swine Centre (PSC) is celebrating 35 years of practical, industry-focused research supporting Canada’s pork industry. Established as a non-profit organization in 1991, PSC grew from a University of Saskatchewan research facility into a 300-sow research centre. Its work focuses on nutrition, engineering, animal behaviour, and contract research, with an emphasis on economic, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability.
A key part of PSC’s success has been its close partnership with pork producers, industry organizations, governments, and the University of Saskatchewan. Research priorities have evolved with industry needs, covering areas such as group sow housing, transportation, nutrition, feed management, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability. PSC also places strong emphasis on knowledge transfer through publications, events, demonstrations, and on-farm communication. Looking ahead, continued partnerships and industry-driven research will help PSC address challenges facing Canadian pork producers over the next 35 years.
