Dietary Cereal Affects Intestine Bacteria Numbers in Weaned Pigs

With reduction of antibiotic use, control over intestine health may become more difficult. Around 70% of diets for weaned pigs are composed of cereal grain. The fibre from the cereal may have an impact on bacteria populations  in the intestine. Pigs were fed three diets (corn, wheat or barley) and bacterial populations in the small intestine were characterized. Bacteria populations in the intestine may be affected by dietary fibre.
