Effect of Extender, Cooling Method and Incubation Time on Storage of Extended Boar Semen at 5°C

October 21, 2020

The temperature extended boar semen is usually stored at (17-18°C) is difficult to maintain, especially during transport. If the temperature fluctuates, the quality of the semen can be affected but often goes unnoticed. Cooling units could be used during transport if extended boar semen could be stored at 5°C. Three commercial extenders were investigated as well as incubation time and cooling method. Sperm progressive motility had acceptable values along with total viability and motility over time when stored at 5°C. The most successful method was storing the sperm at 17°C for a minimum of 24 hours before decreasing the temperature to 5°C in storage.
