The flaxseed crushing industry has flaxseed meal as a by-product. Many potential health benefits have been noticed from α-linolenic acid (ALA). Flaxseed is the richest plant-based source of ALA. Creating a product enriched with omega-3 fatty acids through flaxseed and its by-products is a goal of the animal industry. A double pressure technique using a screw press was used to make the flaxseed meal for this study. Growth performance, feed conversion or intake were not effected by inclusion up to 15% flaxseed meal in growing and finishing pigs. Amounts of ALA were increased in the backfat and loins of the pigs who ingested flaxseed meal. A premium price might be possible by using this to sell pork to specialized markets.
