Evaluation of a Treatment Method to Control Hydrogen Sulphide Emission from Swine Manure

The oil industry developed a treatment approach that was modified to be used for the swine industry. This approach involves nitrate or molybdate to control swine manures’ emission of hydrogen sulphide. Previous research was on closed systems where the levels of hydrogen sulphide in the headspace were much higher. The open system and molybdate were further investigated. In closed systems, it was noted that fresh manure created more hydrogen sulphide gas and molybdate maintained low levels over six months. Molybdate reduced the level of hydrogen sulphide in the open system as well. This new technology costs less than 1% of each market hogs overall production in the grow-finish stage for a 300 sow operation.
