Evaluating Energy Usage and Various Energy Conservation Strategies for Swine Barns

Substantial energy input is needed in temperate regions for swine production. As energy prices increase, so do the costs, with the third largest variable for swine production being utilities. Energy conservation measures were examined by looking at current energy usage in order to improve the energy use efficiency in swine production operations. 28 swine facilities were surveyed, showing a large variability in energy use. Energy audits were completed on four of the barns to identify high contributors to energy use so in the future intervention can be taken and new technology can be developed. These areas include space heating and ventilation in the nursery and grow-finish rooms. Up to 47, 391 kWh of electricity (79 kWh/sow) or 88,404 m3 of natural gas (147 m3/sow) can be reached.
