Ammonia has odour and environmental implications so the excretion of nitrogen is problematic as this is the main form. Paylean® with ractopamine hydrochloride as its active ingredient improves average daily gain, carcass lean growth and feed efficiency when added to finishing swine diets. Ractopamine may be able to reduce nutrient excretion through increased nutrient uptake. The effect of 5 or 10 mg/kg ractopamine was observed in regard to nitrogen and water balance in finishing swine. Feed efficiency, average daily gain and nitrogen retention in the carcass were increased, while urine output and water intake decreased. Paylean can reduce the impact of pork production environmentally due to the improvement of water and nitrogen utilization in finishing pigs.
