Controlling Environmental Emissions from Swine Barns using Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

November 20, 2020

A long-term concern to humans, animals and the environment are the environmental emissions produced by hog production operations. Previous work investigated nanoparticles and their ability to control hydrogen sulphide, ammonia and odour emissions from swine manure. Zinc oxide nanoparticles had the greatest potential for doing this in a small-scale test set-up, so now it is being investigated under actual barn production conditions. Hydrogen sulphide was reduced by over 95%, though ammonia and odour concentrations were not affected when the nanoparticles were added into the manure. When a zinc oxide filter was used in the ventilation air recirculation system, hydrogen sulphide and ammonia concentrations were significantly reduced at the human and animal levels.
