Does Palatability Affect the Intake of Peas in Pigs?

WShannon

November 20, 2020

Field peas are an excellent feed ingredient for swine due to the high content in certain essential amino acids and digestible energy. They are also a major source of income for Western Canada farmers. Concerns about feed intake and taste have led to Canadian farmers not wanting to use high levels of field peas. This study demonstrated no aversion when feeding peas, even when inclusion rates were up to 60%. There was no post-ingestive or taste aversion and consumption levels were equivalent to those of soybean diets. Pea and canola based diets have similar palatability.
