Development of an Air Filtration System for Swine Transport Vehicles to Protect Against Airborne Diseases During Transport

Transporting breeding stock across Canada is a daily occurrence with farms each having biosecurity procedures to reduce potential disease outbreaks. Infecting breeding stock during transport is a risk, especially through pig dense areas. Measures are needed to protect breeding stock during transport to avoid infection in the high-value animals and consequent economic loss. This will also help decrease potential infection being introduced to high-health commercial herds. An air filtration system fitted to a transport vehicle may help prevent infection. Different options were evaluated to make a prototype design for the air filtration system. It will be tested for providing suitable thermal environment and in preventing airborne-transmitted pathogens transmission during transport.
