Land application of livestock wastewater is creating challenges for producers due to costs and environmental impacts. Finding alternatives is of great interest in order to have safe disposal with reduced costs. Wastewater contains nitrogenous and organic compounds that can be a source of energy and could offset the energy required for treatment if harnessed. Microbial fuel cell technology was examined in treating agricultural wastewater with nitrogenous and organic compounds. This was done to reduce or eliminate pollutants and to create electricity. Microbial fuel cell type bioreactors successfully treated organic and nitrogenous compounds with concomitant generation of energy.
