December 21, 2020

A novel species of Brachyspira was discovered that causes severe illness in pigs. Testing is being completed on different strains and how to treat them as some may be resistant to certain antibiotics. This testing has many benefits like the correct dosage and drug being known, reducing disease mortality and economic losses as well as having a more precise bill for producers since only one drug is dispensed. Reducing the disease severity and duration also boosts animal welfare and pleases the consumers due to the proper medication being given, not just a blanket of antibiotics for every disease. The testing of new diseases on how they should be treated has numerous benefits to the pork industry.
