Economic Costs of PEDv

WShannon
Management
November 3, 2020

Strict biosecurity protocols are needed to limit the spread of PEDv. PEDv has a large impact on reproduction by reducing farrowing rates, amount of piglets born alive and mortality rates. Grower-Finisher pigs also have performance losses. It can take up to 10 weeks for baseline productivity to return. The best case scenario for pre-weaning mortality alone when infected with PEDv is a setback of $216 per sow compared to the worst case scenario of $338 per sow.
