RESEARCH SCIENTIST – NUTRITION

THE POSITION: Applications are invited for the full-time permanent position of Research Scientist – Nutrition. As the scientific thought leader in this field, you will develop and manage a research program that meets the  evolving needs of the commercial pork industry as it balances the goals of efficient production, social responsibility and continuous improvement of animal care. The successful candidate will collaborate widely across disciplines both nationally and globally and seek practical solutions to questions which have productivity, economic, social and moral implications for various stakeholders in the pork value chain. The Research Scientist is  required to obtain adjunct status at the University of Saskatchewan and supervise graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. This position provides an exciting career opportunity for someone interested in conducting market-driven nutrition research motivated by a strong desire to interact with and support the pork industry in areas of efficiency, sustainability and animal welfare. Current research areas include projects on nutritional  support of swine health, nitrogen utilization, and creep feeding. Development of your own research program is required. The position is part of the senior management team at the Prairie Swine Centre, with competitive salary and benefits, and the opportunity to work as part of a dynamic team to make a difference in the industry and academia. Start date is flexible between February 1 – May 1, 2025.

THE CANDIDATE: The successful applicant will enjoy working with the swine industry in a research environment and have a PhD degree in swine nutrition with a strong knowledge of nutrition concepts and practical applications. The applicant will have strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills and have demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team as both leader and participant. Knowledge of the North  American pork industry is an asset. Both junior and senior level scientists are invited to apply.

THE COMPANY: Prairie Swine Centre Inc. is a non-profit swine research corporation affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan and is located 10 km east of Saskatoon, SK, Canada. It offers nationally and internationally recognized programs in Ethology/Welfare, Nutrition and Engineering research, Knowledge Transfer and education all directed towards the efficiency and sustainability of pork production. The Centre
operates a 300-sow farrow-to-finish herd, conducts research at all stages of production and currently employs 35 full and part-time staff plus students. Prairie Swine Centre is situated within a very strong research community that includes the University of Saskatchewan (College of Agriculture and Bioresources, College of Engineering, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Medicine), the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron and the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization – International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac). The University of Saskatchewan is also home to the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Swine Welfare at the WCVM.
