November 3, 2020

Some new options are available to the industry regarding how to quantify lameness. These include a two scale scoring system and also the use of force plates, although they are expensive. To improve costs of production, longevity of sows is needed. Gilts do not pay for themselves until they reach third parity. Lameness levels are influenced by group sizes, partitions, flooring types, dynamic versus static feeders and space per sow. Lameness costs can vary from $161 – $447 per diagnosis.
