Evaluating the future of the herd

Hannah Burlet, Mauricio Gonzalez, Steffen Klenk – At the 2026 PSC Producer Meetings, the PIC team discussed careful gilt development, appropriate breeding targets, body-condition monitoring, and strong feed and water management to improve sow performance and retention.

Research shows that gilts should receive early boar exposure and be bred at the right age, weight and heat cycle. Breeding too heavily can reduce lifetime performance. Monitoring body condition can help producers adjust feeding and prepare gilts for farrowing.

Feed and water intake are especially important during lactation. Sows should return to full feeding quickly after farrowing, while good water flow is essential for supporting high milk production.
