Baseline Environmental Data Collection for Research and Production Facility
Intensive livestock operations have potential environmental impacts which limit the establishment of these operations. To understand the impact that is produced, the changes in environmental conditions before and after the facility is operating must be made. Air, soil and water...
Poor Immunity from a Strep. suis Autogenous Bacterin
A major cause of death in recently weaned pigs is a bacterial infection Streptococcus suis. There are many strains which makes it difficult to control and vaccinate for. An autogenous bacterin vaccine was created for the strain SX-428 and measured for its...
Ideas to Fine Tune Your Operation
During these unprecedented times producers are challenged with maintaining operational efficiency and assessing external factors that directly impact their operations. By taking a inward approach we may be able to find little things that can positively impact the bottom line. ...
Water Intake and Wastage from Nipple Drinkers
Among nutrients, water is required in the greatest amount but has received the least attention. Water intake of grower/finisher pigs has been reported to range from 1.9 to 6.8 l/d, depending on body weight and feed intake. However, most ‘water intake’ reported in...
Considerations for Large Group Housing of Finishing Pigs
Many questions have been asked about facility design and management of grower/finisher hogs in large groups. This document provides a practical evaluation of the raising of finisher hogs in large groups and encourages further evaluation of the appropriateness of this housing and management...

Science Helps Hogs to the Finish(ing) Line
By Geoff Geddes, for Swine Innovation Porc To succeed in pork production, you must consider a range of factors and how they interact, and dealing with low energy feed is a perfect example. Previous research has found that low, constant net energy (NE) diets for...
Group Sow Housing
The National Sow Housing Conversion Project (NSHCP) was a Canada-wide project with the purpose of providing group sow housing information to swine producers and industry partners. For more information please click on the image below.
Evaluating New Crop Grain
Density or bushel weight is commonly used to estimate grain quality. Bushel weight is easy, low-cost and fast, ADF and NDF are none of these. Research over the past 20 years, however, has been unable to demonstrate a good relationship between bushel weight and feeding quality of grains for...
Effectively Assessing Technology
New technologies are constantly being introduced into barns due to promised benefits and enhanced profitability. However, these innovations can also introduce new challenges and costs, such as the impact of new technologies on worker health and safety. So how do...
Precision Feeding for Gestating Sows
The objective of this project was to assess the impact of an individualized feeding strategy for pregnant sows whose dietary intakes vary depending on stage of gestation and the individual characteristics of the sow, on growth performances, productivity and feed...
